Some Air Conditioning Basics: What Is SEER?
SEER stands for Season Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is a rating system used by the US Government to establish the efficiency level of cooling equipment. The higher the SEER rating, the less electricity the equipment uses and the more efficient it is. SEER is determined by dividing an air conditioners cooling capacity, (measured in BTU’s) by the power usage, (measured in Watts), of electricity consumed. Simply put, SEER is like the miles-per-gallon rating for your air conditioning system.
What does “Tons” mean? “Tons” is industry jargon referring to the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. One “Ton” is equal to 12,000 BTU’s of cooling capacity. Residential equipment is generally rated from 1.5 to 5 tons, measured in half ton increments.
